The Voyage to Baghdad
Sultan Murad IV’s historic journey to Baghdad saw the Imperial Army taking 197 days to reach its destination, with 66 rest stops along the way. Upon his triumphant arrival, the Sultan held a grand court of justice in his Imperial tent, seated on a golden throne adorned with a polished saber.
Plunder and Protection
During the conquest, incidents of plunder occurred, prompting the appointment of Janissary Colonels to safeguard important locations in Baghdad, including the palace of Iranian commander Bektash Khan and the cloth market. In a gesture of goodwill, Sultan Murad IV bestowed lavish gifts upon Bektash Khan, who reciprocated with an elegant sword adorned with gold and jewels Customized Istanbul Tours.
Honoring the Tomb of Imam-i Azam
Following the conquest, Sultan Murad IV visited the Tomb of Imam-i Azam, Abu Hanifa, and upon his return to Diyarbekir, commissioned the region’s finest jewellers to craft intricate silver doors, lattice work, chandeliers, and oil lamps for the holy site in Baghdad. This act of reverence demonstrates the Sultan’s commitment to honoring sacred sites and traditions.
